The people who are most likely to look down on ordinary folks are often those who have just left that circle themselves—so, once they’ve climbed up, do they immediately rush to cut ties with their past?
She frowned and said something:
“Do people like this really live here now?”
I remember one time, Cat Brother and a relative went back to the old place Cat Brother used to live to pick up some things—(in a big city, within the inner ring, but it was an old, run-down building with no elevator).
In the stairwell, a man who looked like a migrant worker was carrying his things and climbing step by step. She glanced at him. Immediately she frowned and told Cat Brother, “Do people like this live here now?”
Cat Brother was stunned at the time. He wanted to say something but didn’t—because when she was young, her family also came out of a small place step by step. We even gave her a nickname, “country person.” When she was little, we’d even make up songs to mock her.
Later, she came to the big city, and her career development kept getting better.
But at some point after that—she seemed to start looking down on people like them.
People who had once been like herself, or whose background was similar to hers.
Cat Brother thought about it for a long time.
And it felt like there might be a kind of person who’s just a little strange—like once they’ve just completed a class/status jump, they may start looking down on ordinary people.
For example, looking down on manual laborers, or looking down on people from their hometowns, and so on.
Does that include looking down on their own past self, too? I don’t know.
But Cat Brother feels that people who have truly seen the world—people who are truly capable—
maybe they’re actually rarely like that.
Cat Brother herself thinks that people who rely on their hands to make a living have nothing to be ashamed of.
And she also thinks that a truly capable person might be someone who, no matter how high their status is, is still willing to bend down and respect others.
Have any of you seen someone like that?
