Analysts: The US and Iran show no willingness to back down, and the Strait of Hormuz could become a “long-term powder keg”

ME News message, July 12 (UTC+8): Ian Ralby, a senior researcher at the Maritime Strategy Center and president of Auxilium Worldwide, warned that the war between the United States and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz cannot be resolved through military means. He added that continued fighting will only drive up global fuel and food costs. One side has the will to keep fighting, while the other has the will to keep trying to undermine and weaken the other side’s capabilities. That is, in itself, the formula for the conflict to continue. Unfortunately, this may mean that the Strait of Hormuz will remain a long-term problem as a navigable waterway. The parties affected by the conflict may push the US and Iran to resume diplomatic processes, but changing this dynamic will be difficult because both sides are fickle, and both have deeply entrenched interests tied to success and victory. Unfortunately, the US has a very flexible concept of what “victory” looks like; while for Iran, they now have a very clear desire to seek some kind of retaliation for everything that has happened—a notion that leads to long-term violent conflict.
