France’s crypto ransomware case has seen explosive growth over the past three years, with Pnaco having officially filed charges against 88 people

ME News, April 25 (UTC+8): Citing data from the Office of the National Organized Crime Prosecutor (Pnaco), as reported by Le Monde, France has seen a cumulative 135 cryptocurrency kidnapping and extortion cases since 2023. The cases have surged: 18 cases in 2024, 67 in 2025, and 47 cases as of April 2026. Currently, 12 key cases are under investigation, and 88 people have been formally indicted (including 10+ minors); 75 people have already been detained. Prosecutor Vanessa Peyrat confirmed that behind the cases there is a cross-regional structured criminal network, whose members have carried out multiple consecutive attacks. Pnaco is coordinating with the Ministry of the Interior to strengthen nationwide criminal crackdown and preventive protection mechanisms. (Source: PANews)
