Quantum-Resistant Upgrade Proposed for Layer-1 as Post-Crypto Signatures Reach Testnet
Code, not commentary, moved the security debate this week. A core developer group published a draft to add SPHINCS+ signatures to a top-10 Layer-1, with testnet activation slated for August. The change would let wallets generate quantum-safe addresses while keeping legacy ECDSA paths for backward compatibility. Size is the trade-off: a post-quantum signature runs 8 KB versus 64 bytes today, but batched verification cuts on-chain cost to 1.7x current fees.
Why now? Researchers at three universities demonstrated a 2,048-qubit logical array that factors 1,024-bit keys in simulation, trimming the safety horizon from decades to years if scaling holds. The draft does not panic, it prepares. Nodes can flag QR-addresses, and bridges will require them for assets over $10 million, creating an incentive without forcing migration.
Market impact showed up in fee markets. Builders on the chain saw priority gas spike 22% as arbitrage bots tested the larger payloads, while validator clients began benchmarking RAM usage. LSD protocols noted that a 2x block size would lift hardware needs, possibly pushing home stakers out, so governance is already debating hardware grants.
For traders, the headline is risk repricing. Chains that ship QR early could attract institutional mandates that require post-quantum custody. Chains that lag may see insurers add clauses or raise premiums. The upgrade is not live, yet the option value is. Capital tends to migrate to the chain that treats threats like engineering tickets, not philosophy debates.
