ME News message: On April 25 (UTC+8), the French National Anti-Organized Crime Prosecutor’s Office (Pnaco) said that cases of cryptocurrency-related kidnapping and illegal detention are continuing to surge. Among the 12 related cases currently under investigation, 88 people have been indicted, including over 10 minors, and another 75 people are being held in custody pending trial. Prosecutors’ data show that since 2023, French law enforcement has recorded 135 cases of this type, including 18 cases in 2024, rising to 67 cases in 2025, and 47 cases so far in 2026. The cases largely involve violent kidnappings, extortion for ransom, and forcing victims to transfer crypto assets. The prosecutors noted that some suspects have appeared in multiple different cases, indicating that a structured criminal network has already formed behind the scenes. Earlier, the kidnapping incident involving Ledger co-founder David Balland was also seen as an important sign that security risks for France’s crypto industry are escalating. (Source: ChainCatcher)
