Vitalik proposes a compromise between two AI camps: pre-agree to trigger a pause if extreme circumstances arise

ME News message, July 11 (UTC+8), Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin posted to discuss the controversy surrounding AI superintelligence. He said that the AI community is currently divided into two camps: one believes superintelligence will inevitably arrive before 2040, so it must be controlled as soon as possible; the other believes AI is just ordinary technology, and that pushing for a pause is about controlling humans. Vitalik said he is not sure which side is correct and is open to slowing down or pausing, but he opposes the narrative pushed by large AI companies that “open source is harmful,” saying it is essentially about power concentration. Vitalik proposed a compromise: both sides can pre-agree that if certain extreme scenarios (such as a super pandemic disease, large-scale unemployment, etc.) truly occur, they will agree to initiate an AI pause; if these situations do not happen, then they will proceed according to the other side’s plan. He acknowledged that all response measures have flaws, and that humans can only choose between “imperfect” and “more imperfect,” but defensive technologies such as formal verification, cryptography, and secure hardware are worth advancing in both worlds.
