Many people in this world cannot understand that people, the nation, and the government can be separated. The people are the individual lives within it; the nation is a community formed by history, culture, and institutions; and the government is only the organization that manages the nation’s operations. The three are interconnected, but they are not the same. Loving the people and culture does not mean you must agree with all government actions; criticizing the government does not mean you deny the nation. Real maturity of understanding is to distinguish community, institutions, and power—not to merge them into one. When these three concepts are confused, criticism of the government can be misunderstood as denying the nation, and one’s identification with the nation can also be misconstrued as obedience to power.
