Argentina staged another classic World Cup comeback, scoring three goals in 13 minutes late in the match to overturn a 2-0 deficit and beat Egypt 3-2, advancing to the quarter-finals. After contributing one goal and one assist, an emotional Messi wept tears of joy and said in an interview: "We survived once again. We feel relieved. Later, in the press conference room, Scaloni said: "Football is about tactics and strategy, but it's also about heart and instinct. Tactics are important, but without the spirit we showed today, we would have been eliminated. As Messi said in Qatar, the team never abandons anyone. That spirit can be felt. I think Argentina controlled the game throughout, except for two or three brief spells from the opposition. Egypt is a very strong team with many excellent players. Argentina celebrated the victory, but from Egypt's perspective, they believe the result was grossly unjust. In their view, on the one hand, Egypt had a goal disallowed after a retrospective foul call from an earlier phase; on the other hand, for Argentina's winning goal, the VAR review overlooked a potential foul by an Argentine player on Salah, which should have disallowed the goal and awarded Egypt a penalty instead.
Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan was furious: "I'll say what I think, regardless of the consequences. This was clearly a manipulated match – the whole world saw it. And one more thing: if they want Argentina to win so badly, why even gather the rest of us teams to participate?"
Hassan said bluntly that FIFA wants Messi to stay in the World Cup: "FIFA promotes fair play, but we didn't see it on the pitch. Without these wrong decisions, the result would have been different. Everything comes down to marketing and money. They want Messi, the world champion, to remain competitive in the tournament. In football, many things are decided off the pitch based on various interests. What happened is unfair. Egypt deserved to go through – we performed better than Argentina."
