Late-night explosion! Polymarket's Cristiano Ronaldo tear bet hits $23.94 million, shorts and longs battle it out, UMA oracle delivers final verdict, retail investors played for fools?

Round of 16 in the World Cup: Portugal was stunned 0-1 by Spain, ending 41-year-old Ronaldo's final World Cup abruptly. Cameras captured him with red eyes, wiping his face, and struggling to hold back tears—global media described it as "in tears" or "tearful." But on the crypto prediction market Polymarket, a $23.94 million bet exploded: Did Ronaldo cry or not?

This market, launched in June, clearly states the rules: Only "clearly visible tears rolling down the face" counts as Yes, and it must occur on the field or on the bench, whether before, during, or after the match. When the match ended on July 6, the market showed a 85% probability of No, but two subsequent proposals for a No result were contested. On July 8, the Yes probability suddenly surged to 99%, entering the UMA oracle's final review.

The bulls and bears are completely divided. The Yes side presented high-definition photos and videos: moist eyes, glistening tears, wiping with hands—isn't that crying? The No side insisted on the literal meaning: Tears must be clearly rolling down the face; red eyes don't count. In the viral images on Xiaohongshu, Ronaldo indeed had tears in his eyes, but upon zooming in, no trace of tears flowing down his face can be seen.

This is not the first time Polymarket has pulled such tricks. In the previous prediction market on Strategy selling $BTC, the company actually sold 32 BTC on May 31, but the 8-K announcement wasn't released until June 1. The platform forcibly supplemented an explanation and ruled No, causing an uproar of "PolyScam" across the web.

The essence of the problem: Prediction markets are highly efficient for quantifiable, verifiable events, but once subjective visual judgment is involved, they become a meat grinder for bulls and bears. The platform rakes in fees, UMA gains governance presence, and retail investors fight tooth and nail over whether a single tear rolled down a cheek.

On July 8, the official supplementary note stated that qualifying evidence already exists—footage taken on the pitch after the match, showing Ronaldo crying with visible tears. But this vague clarification only escalated the controversy.

If you ask me, before betting on such emotional events, read the fine print between the lines of the rules. The platform doesn't want the rules to be flawless; gray areas are the bait. Gamblers fixate on the $23.94 million pie, never realizing they are the cream being consumed.
