The World Cup Is Reaching the Business End-Who Will Go All the Way?

Knockout football is all about legendary moments, and every single match is now effectively a final. One bad touch can kill off a tournament dream; one moment of genius can carve a name into the history books. This, ultimately, is why predicting the World Cup winner becomes so fascinating as the stages advance.

My opinion on who will win it all has fluctuated significantly throughout this tournament. Several strong pre-tournament favourites have at various points looked imposing and, at others, fragile, while one or two unfancied outsiders have given the impression that they might genuinely belong among the very best. That’s the beauty of tournament football – reputation isn’t enough.

If I were to offer a prediction today, it would still be for a team with a depth of talent in the squad and experience in dealing with the high-pressure situations that are part and parcel of the World Cup. Quality will win individual games, composure and organization will win tournaments. The best-drilled and best-defended sides that are able to remain patient will invariably find a way.

A significant part of the enjoyment of watching a World Cup has now become the prediction markets that run in parallel to the matches themselves. Rather than just backing the team that you love, it’s interesting to compare your thoughts with those of the collective wisdom and to observe how the perception of probabilities shifts in response to goals, injuries or indeed shocks.

However, that’s not to say that a shock isn’t inevitable in any World Cup. The tournament is littered with tales of triumph against the odds, and there has already been enough this time around to suggest that the leading contenders are by no means invincible. Momentum can be as significant an asset as talent.

Right now, my choice is purely based on consistent performance, rather than simply on popularity or hype. It would appear that whoever is best able to maintain their nerve and focus through the intense pressures of the knockout matches is the side that will end up lifting the trophy.

What about you, the World Cup faithful? Are you backing one of the traditional giants, or are you tempted to take a punt on an underdog making history?

Who do you think will be your World Cup winner – and what gives you the confidence?
