[ME AI] News, the South Korean government is considering extending the GPU guarantee support project for AI core resources. On July 7, according to industry sources, the Ministry of Science and ICT is investigating the ability of major South Korean cloud service providers to additionally build out GPU capacity, with the goal of extending the "AI Computing Resource Utilization Foundation Strengthening Project." The core of this project involves the government allocating a budget to purchase GPUs, deploying them in cloud service provider data centers, and supporting their use by industry, academia, and research institutions. The South Korean government invested a budget of 1 trillion won last year and 2 trillion won this year, securing over 20k GPUs. The project was originally scheduled to end this year, but due to surging demand for advanced resources such as Nvidia's next-generation GPU Vera Rubin, the South Korean government is developing comprehensive countermeasures, including data center efficiency optimization and new space guarantee plans, and has reportedly applied to the Ministry of Economy and Finance for an "over-budget limit" for GPU guarantees. Industry estimates suggest that considering this year's GPU guarantee budget and government intent, next year's budget could reach up to approximately 4 trillion won. Industry insiders say that compared to GPU supply itself, "equipment installation space" will be the key factor determining the project's success, as running thousands of high-performance GPUs simultaneously requires substantial power supply and advanced cooling systems, and the equipment installation space held by South Korean companies is already nearing saturation.
