The AI boom has created a new earnings champion and it's Samsung.
Samsung Electronics has reported an extraordinary Q2 2026 operating profit of 89.4 trillion KRW (around $58.4 billion), delivering one of the strongest quarterly performances in tech history.
Even more impressive, the company outperformed both NVIDIA and Apple in quarterly operating profit, proving that the biggest winners of the AI era aren't only software companies—they're also the businesses building the hardware behind it.
So, what's driving this growth?
The answer is simple: memory chips.
As AI models become larger and data centers continue expanding, demand for high-performance DRAM and NAND memory has surged. Samsung's semiconductor division has become the company's biggest profit engine, benefiting from strong orders and improving chip prices.
Another major factor is supply.
Memory production remains relatively tight while AI investment keeps accelerating. When demand rises faster than supply, prices strengthen—and that's exactly what's happening across the semiconductor industry.
The momentum isn't limited to Samsung alone. Memory chip makers have seen significant growth as investors continue betting on AI infrastructure, cloud computing, and next-generation technologies.
However, markets are looking beyond today's numbers.
Questions remain about how long the current AI spending cycle will last, whether chip prices can stay elevated, and how future supply could affect profitability. These factors will play a major role in determining whether the industry's record earnings can continue.
Samsung has also shared part of its success with employees by expanding bonus payouts, reflecting the company's strong financial position and confidence in its business.
Samsung's latest results send a clear message: AI is creating opportunities across the entire technology ecosystem.
While software often grabs the headlines, none of it is possible without the advanced chips powering data centers and AI systems.
Today's record-breaking profit is more than a financial achievement—it highlights how critical semiconductor companies have become in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
The AI race isn't only about who builds the smartest models. It's also about who supplies the technology that makes those models possible.
