#Vitalik公布精简以太坊路线图 A "Merge"-Level Survival Restructuring
On July 4, 2026, Vitalik Buterin unveiled the "Lean Ethereum" roadmap draft. This is not a routine upgrade, but a comprehensive protocol restructuring lasting 3 to 4 years—Vitalik calls it Ethereum's third major iteration since the 2022 "Merge."
Why Must It Be "Lean"?
The quantum threat is approaching. As of July 2026, over 34% of Bitcoin's supply has had its public keys permanently exposed on-chain—once a sufficiently powerful quantum computer emerges, these assets could be quietly stolen within weeks. Ethereum's cryptographic system is equally vulnerable. Vitalik stated that the priority of quantum security has been "significantly elevated," and finalizing a quantum-secure solution for Blob data has "become urgent."
Core Changes: A Full-Stack Restructuring from Verification to Consensus
In terms of verification mechanisms, recursive STARKs will replace direct re-execution as the native L1 verification component. The consensus layer will decouple the availability chain from finality, achieving final confirmation in 1 to 2 rounds. State management introduces new scalable state models such as UTXO and ring buffers, with dynamic state reaching 2TB and new state reaching 100TB by 2030—Gas fees for ERC-20 and NFT migrations could be reduced by over 10 times. Privacy protection is elevated from an add-on feature to a "first-class design goal." Additionally, the roadmap explores introducing RISC-V or leanISA as the protocol's underlying VM.
Reality Check Beneath the Grand Blueprint
However, this blueprint faces severe challenges: the Ethereum Foundation is undergoing layoffs of about 20% and budget cuts of 40%, with core researchers Tim Beiko, Barnabé Monnot, and others departing. The community has mixed reactions—researcher Dankrad Feist believes 3 to 4 years is too slow and suggests AI-assisted acceleration; analyst Ignas notes that the roadmap addresses most community demands but still fails to touch on tokenomics issues.
"Lean Ethereum" is essentially a forward-looking preventive restructuring—a comprehensive replacement of cryptographic infrastructure before the quantum threat truly arrives. This is not only a technical challenge but also the ultimate test of Ethereum's governance and execution capabilities.
