#Vitalik公布精简以太坊路线图 A "Merge"-Level Self-Revolution
On July 5, 2026, Vitalik Buterin released the draft roadmap for "Lean Ethereum." This is not a routine upgrade, but a comprehensive protocol reconstruction lasting 3 to 4 years — which Vitalik calls the third major iteration of Ethereum after "The Merge" in 2022.
Why "Lean"?
Ethereum is facing triple pressure: the approaching quantum computing may crack the existing encryption system; the continuous expansion of state data increases the burden on node operation; and gas fee volatility and network congestion have long plagued user experience. Vitalik said bluntly that the priority of quantum security issues has "significantly increased." Against this backdrop, "lean" is not an option but a necessity for survival.
Core Changes: Full-Stack Reconstruction from Verification to Consensus
In terms of verification mechanisms, recursive STARKs will replace direct re-execution as a native L1 verification component. The consensus layer decouples the availability chain from finality, achieving 1 to 2 rounds of final confirmation. State management introduces new scalable states such as UTXO and ring buffers, with the dynamic state size expected to reach 2TB and additional state 100TB by 2030 — after migrating ERC-20 and NFTs, gas fees may be reduced by more than 10 times. Privacy protection is upgraded from an add-on feature to a "first-class design goal." In addition, the roadmap explores introducing RISC-V or leanISA as the underlying VM of the protocol.
At the execution level, the Hegota hard fork in the second half of 2026 will be the last upgrade of the "pre-lean" era. The entire Strawmap plan spans approximately seven forks, extending from 2026 to 2030.
Challenges and Outlook
However, this grand blueprint faces real-world tests: the Ethereum Foundation is experiencing layoffs of about 20% and a budget cut of 40%, with multiple core researchers leaving one after another. The community has mixed opinions — some researchers believe 3 to 4 years is too slow and suggest AI-assisted acceleration; some analysts question the Foundation's ability to deliver on time.
"Lean Ethereum" is essentially a preventive reconstruction for the future — a complete replacement of the cryptographic infrastructure before the quantum threat arrives. It will determine whether Ethereum can evolve from a "fat protocol" to a lighter, more secure "lean" version of itself. This is not only a technical challenge but also the ultimate test of Ethereum's governance and execution capabilities.
