#PredictWorldCup🇵🇹vs🇪🇸
Two giants of the Iberian Peninsula face off today, and this match has the potential to be one of the most evenly matched encounters yet. Portugal and Spain will battle for a place in the quarter-finals in this round of 16 match at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
The two teams have had very different journeys to get here. Spain is still undefeated in the tournament and topped their group, standing out as one of the most consistent teams in the tournament with their playmaking style and possession rate. Portugal, on the other hand, has had a more inconsistent performance, drawing with the Democratic Republic of Congo and Colombia, then beating Uzbekistan 5-0, and only managing to eliminate Croatia in the round of 32 with a goal in extra time.
Their history also suggests how evenly matched this game could be. In their last ten encounters, there have been six draws, two Portuguese wins, and two Spanish wins. Their most recent meeting was the Nations League final last summer, where Portugal won on penalties after a 2-2 draw. It's also true that there's a goal drought between these two teams; seven of their last ten matches have ended with under 2.5 goals.
In terms of squads, Cristiano Ronaldo is still Portugal's most important weapon with three goals in the tournament, and he scored his first ever goal in a knockout match. However, Goncalo Ramos' form, who scored the decisive goal against Croatia in the last match, creates a real selection challenge for manager Roberto Martinez. On the Spanish side, eighteen-year-old Lamine Yamal and Mikel Oyarzabal, who is leading the goalscoring race in the tournament, are the lifeblood of the attack.
Market expectations generally favor Spain slightly, mainly due to their consistency and solid defense throughout the tournament. But Portugal's past resilience in big matches and the possibility of this being Ronaldo's last World Cup provide extra motivation for the team. A low-scoring match is expected, which wouldn't be surprising given the defensive discipline of both teams.
