ME News reports that on April 24 (UTC+8), India is promoting the use of the digital rupee through about 10 welfare pilot projects, distributing approximately $80 billion in subsidies and food benefits via the e-rupee digital currency, aiming to reduce fund leakage and corruption while providing clearer use cases for central bank digital currencies. Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India plans to propose a CBDC interoperability solution among member countries at the 2026 BRICS summit, with the goal of enhancing cross-border trade settlement efficiency while reducing reliance on the US dollar. Currently, the e-rupee has about 10 million users, with cumulative transaction volume reaching $3.6 billion, though this is significantly smaller than India's monthly UPI system, which handles about $300 billion in transactions.
