#EthereumFoundationRestructuresForEfficiency
Streamline the Organization, Ethereum Foundation Lays Off 20% of Contributors
The Ethereum Foundation (EF) officially announced a reorganization on Tuesday (23/6) by cutting 54 employees, or about 20% of its total staff. This reduction indicates that EF had approximately 270 staff members before this efficiency policy was carried out. The move was taken to align the organizational structure and budget so that EF can focus more on long-term targets without being disrupted by market dynamics. For the affected contributors, EF remains responsible by preparing severance packages of at least one month’s salary per year of service, along with career transition support, so they can continue working in the crypto industry.
Through this leaner new structure, EF maps its work focus into five strategic clusters to pursue the CROPS agenda (Censorship Resistance, Openness, Privacy, and Security). These five tracks include the Protocol Layer, which strengthens the core protocol and long-term research such as post-quantum security; the Access Layer, which safeguards users’ self-sovereignty and AI agents; the User Layer, which delves into real user needs; the Community Layer, which preserves the foundation’s independence; and the Institutional Layer, which bridges cryptographic integration with external institutions.
This streamlining is intentionally carried out so that EF can move more nimbly and focus on steering the CROPS agenda blueprint. Interestingly, because EF is only one organization within the larger Ethereum ecosystem, this internal restructuring should not have a major impact on the network. The decentralized nature of the ecosystem instead creates ample room for the contributors who have left to remain active in building and contributing their capabilities from outside EF.
