Proof of Reserves: Why Transparency Remains the Most Valuable Asset in Crypto

One of the most important lessons the crypto industry learned over the past few years is that trust cannot be built on promises alone. Platforms can talk about security, stability, and reliability all day long, but ultimately users want proof.

That is why Proof of Reserves has become one of the most important standards in modern crypto.

As of March 16, 2026, Gate released its latest Proof of Reserves report, providing a detailed and independently verifiable snapshot of the platform's financial position. The numbers tell a powerful story.

Gate currently maintains an overall reserve ratio of 122%, significantly above the industry benchmark of 100%. Total reserves stand at approximately $7.88 billion, while excess reserves amount to $1.46 billion.

These figures are not future projections.

They are a verifiable representation of assets currently held by the platform.

Looking deeper into the report reveals the strength behind the headline number.

Bitcoin reserves continue to show substantial over-collateralization. User holdings total 17,216 BTC, while Gate holds 25,404 BTC in reserves, resulting in a reserve ratio of 147%. This marks an improvement from the previous 140% level and demonstrates continued strengthening of BTC coverage.

Ethereum maintains similarly strong backing. User balances total 358,121 ETH, supported by 439,611 ETH in reserves, producing an ETH reserve ratio of 122.75%.

Stablecoin coverage also remains solid.

USDT reserves stand at approximately 1.477 billion tokens, compared with 1.451 billion tokens in user holdings.

USDC coverage reaches 110.18%, maintaining reserves above total customer balances.

One of the most striking figures comes from GUSD, where reserves total approximately 320 million tokens against user holdings of around 108 million, resulting in an impressive reserve ratio of 196.50%.

Additional major assets continue to maintain strong coverage:

• GT Reserve Ratio: 136.84%• XRP Reserve Ratio: 116.54%

What makes this report particularly noteworthy is not only the reserve ratios themselves but also the scale of coverage.

Gate's reserves extend across nearly 500 different user assets.

Many platforms focus primarily on their largest holdings when discussing transparency. Gate's report demonstrates reserve coverage across the platform's broader asset ecosystem, showing that transparency is not limited to only the most popular cryptocurrencies.

Every supported asset included in the report maintains reserve backing above 100%.

For users, transparency becomes even more meaningful because it can be personally verified.

Gate utilizes Merkle Tree verification technology, allowing every user to independently confirm that their balances are included in the audited reserve calculation without exposing sensitive account information.

This transforms transparency from something users are simply told into something they can verify themselves.

That distinction matters.

Trust based on statements is useful.

Trust based on mathematics is stronger.

The significance of regular Proof of Reserves reporting extends beyond a single platform.

Following the trust challenges that affected the crypto industry in 2022, reserve transparency evolved from a competitive advantage into an essential requirement.

Gate has continued publishing reserve reports consistently throughout 2026.

The reserve ratio measured approximately 124% in January, increased to around 125% in early February, and currently stands at 122% in March.

These fluctuations reflect normal market valuation changes rather than any deterioration in reserve coverage.

Most importantly, every reported figure remains comfortably above full backing.

For crypto users evaluating where to trade and store digital assets, one question remains critical:

Can the platform prove that customer assets are fully backed?

Gate's latest Proof of Reserves report provides a clear answer.

Nearly 500 supported assets.

Approximately $7.88 billion in reserves.

Around $1.46 billion in excess reserves.

And an overall reserve ratio of 122%.

In crypto, transparency is not optional.

It is the foundation of trust.

And trust begins with proof.
