Threads Faces Another Account Suspension Crisis! Multiple Politicians and Media Outlets Have Been Affected—How to Appeal and Save Yourself When Your Account Is Locked?

Meta's subsidiaries Threads, IG, and FB experience widespread suspension errors, mostly due to system misidentification of "under 13 years old" accounts being locked. Crypto City shares past experiences and tips on how to appeal and self-rescue when facing suspension!

Threads, IG, FB face another wave of suspension disasters, caused by not being under 13 years old

Has your account on IG suddenly been suspended? Between late night June 14 and the morning of June 15, Meta's social platforms Threads, Instagram, and Facebook experienced a large-scale suspension wave. Many adult users received system notifications upon login, with the stated reason almost always being "under 13 years old."

This wave of Meta suspensions affected a wide range of users, including major media outlets like Public Television News Network, Central News Agency, CTS News, and Formosa TV, as well as prominent figures such as former President Chen Shui-bian, Taipei City Councilor Ko Wen-je, former legislator Chen Po-wei, Taoyuan City Councilor Huang Qiong-hui, internet celebrity Director Chen, internet influencer Ba Jiong, talk show host Wu Jing-yi, and historian Brother Li, among others.

Meta officially responded afterward, stating it was due to a technical error that caused a small number of accounts to be mistakenly flagged as under 13. They are actively working to resolve and fix the issue.

Threads, IG account suspension: Self-help guide and appeal channels

When your Threads, IG, or FB account gets suspended, how can you self-rescue? Crypto City has compiled some common steps based on past experiences:

  1. When you are about to be suspended, you will see a notification explaining the suspension when trying to log in. You can click on "Request Review" or "Appeal" to submit a review request.
  2. During the appeal process, users must provide government-issued ID to verify their real identity. If internal review determines it was a system error and removes the suspension, Meta will restore the account's access.
  3. **If you do not encounter this process, you can directly click the official appeal links: Facebook, Instagram, Threads.

Besides submitting reviews directly through the app, Crypto City also shares last year's experience with FB suspensions:

  • Fill out the form in English: There is a mysterious effect where submitting the appeal in English yields better results than in Chinese. Someone who initially appealed in Chinese waited two days without response, but after re-appealing in English, the account was restored in less than 24 hours.
  • Use manual customer support channels: If you have purchased Meta's verified blue check, or manage a Facebook fan page, you can go directly to the Meta Business Support Center page, click the "Get Help" button at the bottom, and describe the mistaken ban through manual support.
  • Avoid multiple submissions: Users who have already submitted an appeal should not submit multiple forms to prevent the system from flagging it as abuse, which could prolong the review process.

Meta suspension errors are not the first occurrence; similar issues happened last year

In fact, around the same time last year, Meta's social platforms also experienced a large-scale suspension wave.

In mid-June 2025, many IG and Threads users suddenly found their accounts locked while browsing normally. The system displayed violations of community guidelines, confusing users.

At that time, several well-known crypto influencers in Taiwan also had their accounts banned, including Brain, Chain Apprentice, Hand Grenade, Mo Mountain Cat, and DA Trader Alliance. By the end of June that year, many FB groups suddenly disappeared, covering topics like anime, gaming, and lifestyle, causing widespread confusion.

The Cybersecurity Department has intervened in the Meta suspension wave

In response to Meta's repeated issues, the Cybersecurity Department has proactively contacted Meta Taiwan after receiving public complaints. Meta responded that the issue was due to a technical problem and emphasized that it was not targeting specific groups or individuals for bans.

Meta's policy requires users to be at least 13 years old to create an account. The platform also has protections for teen accounts, automatically restricting interactions and browsing content. The root cause of the technical error stems from their ongoing development of proactive teen account detection technology. Even if users input an adult's birthday during registration, the system still applies age-appropriate protections. Because this technology combines manual review and automated detection, errors in age verification may occur.

The Cybersecurity Department stated it will continue to monitor the investigation progress of this incident and, upholding the principles of safeguarding citizens' digital rights and information security, demands that Meta communicate transparently, actively address the issue, and jointly protect the public's legitimate rights.
