Amazon announces plans to invest billions of dollars in Missouri to build a data center campus, expected to create over 400 long-term jobs
BlockBeats News, June 16 — Amazon announced that it will invest tens of billions of dollars to build an advanced data center campus in Montgomery County, Missouri, in the United States, which is expected to create more than 400 full-time data center jobs and thousands of construction jobs, and generate hundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue.
As a supporting commitment, Amazon will invest more than $7 million in the local community, including $3 million for emergency dispatch services, over $1 million for the construction of a community activity center at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, and establish a community fund to support local projects.
Amazon said the project will drive upgrades to road and water infrastructure, and will work with the local utility company Ameren Missouri to ensure that the increased electricity costs for the data centers are not passed on to other resident users.
In terms of sustainability, Amazon said that the data centers will use natural air cooling for about 90% of the time, with the period of water cooling not exceeding 7% throughout the year. When operating at full load, the water consumption will be less than 0.1% of the annual replenishment of the local aquifer. The company also plans to reuse water resources through rainwater harvesting and recycling systems, and work with Arable Labs to save about 100 million gallons of water per year for the local watershed through smart agriculture projects.
Amazon said that since 2017, the company has hired more than 10,000 people in Missouri, and has cumulatively contributed more than $9 billion in GDP to the local economy. This data center investment will further support the development of cloud computing and AI infrastructure.
