Group Qualification Outlook — Why Germany Must Win Big Against Curaçao?

At first glance, Germany’s match against Curaçao looks like a “foregone conclusion” game—win and you’re done. But if you analyze the Group E qualification picture closely, you’ll see that Germany not only has to win, but must win big. Goal difference could be the key factor in determining who finishes top of the group.

The four teams in Group E are Germany, Curaçao, Ecuador, and Ivory Coast. Ecuador and Ivory Coast are not exactly easy opponents. Ecuador performed exceptionally well in the South American qualifiers, while Ivory Coast is a strong team from Africa. Even though Germany has the edge in terms of strength, they don’t have a sure win against these two opponents. It’s very possible that three teams end up with points that are close, and the standings will be decided by goal difference.

If Germany only beats Curaçao 1-0 or 2-0, while Ecuador or Ivory Coast rack up a 4-0 or 5-0 against Curaçao, Germany’s goal-difference disadvantage would become very difficult to recover from. That’s why Nagelsmann will absolutely demand that the players go all out in attack from the very first minute—if they can score five, they must not score only four.

This is also why I keep emphasizing the reason behind “Germany winning big.” It’s not because the German team is ruthless, but because the competition in the group stage is too intense. Curaçao has become the “unlucky one”—they have to endure the barrage of Germany’s relentless full-scale attacks. For prediction players, this is a very clear signal: don’t bet on Germany’s narrow win—if you’re going to bet, bet on Germany winning big.
