Germany’s “Set-Piece Nuclear Weapon” — Curaçao’s Air-Defense Alarm Has Already Been Sounded

What is Germany’s traditional strength in football? Heading. From Gerd Müller to Klinsmann, from Bielehof to Klose, the German team has long been packed with players who are excellent at heading. In this World Cup, although Germany mainly relies on ground passing and control, set pieces are still their “nuclear weapon.”

Germany’s squad includes multiple heading specialists, such as Rüdiger, Schlotterbeck, Füllkrug, and Havertz. Their average height exceeds 1.85 meters, giving them a clear advantage when competing for high balls. Curaçao’s back line averages only 1.78 meters—so Germany completely overwhelms them in height.

If Germany wins a corner kick or a free kick in the attacking third, Curaçao’s penalty area will become Germany’s “bombardment zone.” Rüdiger and Schlotterbeck will surge into the box to challenge for headers, and Füllkrug—coming on as a substitute center forward—has even more formidable heading ability. Curaçao’s goalkeeper, Rum, is 1.88 meters tall; while he isn’t short, with Germany producing headed attacks from multiple angles, it’s difficult for him to save them all.

Even more troubling is that when Curaçao defend set pieces, their players tend to lose tight marking. In warm-up matches, they have repeatedly conceded goals from set pieces. Against a team like Germany, whose set-piece tactics are extremely mature, Curaçao’s air-defense alarm has already been sounded. I predict that Germany will score at least one goal from set pieces—either a direct header from a corner, or a scramble for possession following a set-piece free-kick routine.
