Daiyi Chen’s “Quest for Name Rectification”—Can the Former Manchester United Talent Leave a Mark in Front of Neuer?
Earlier, we mentioned Curaçao’s Chinese player Daiyi Chen, but that article mainly focused on his Chinese heritage. This time, I want to talk specifically about his skills and what he can do in this match against Germany.
Daiyi Chen is 25 years old this year. Back then, at Manchester United’s youth academy, he was hailed as “the next big star.” He once made appearances for Manchester United’s first team in UEFA Europa League matches and put in some solid performances. But injuries ruined his professional career—he couldn’t secure a foothold at Manchester United, and later he bounced around several teams. However, he never gave up on himself. With the Curaçao national team, he found back the joy of playing. In World Cup qualifiers, he scored 3 key goals, becoming one of the biggest contributors to Curaçao’s qualification.
Against Germany, Daiyi Chen will most likely play as a winger or a forward. His pace and dribbling are Curaçao’s only hope when launching counterattacks. Germany’s right-sided defenders—whether it’s Kimmich or Henrichs—both like to push forward to provide attacking support, which will leave Daiyi Chen with some space behind the defense. If Curaçao can seize one or two counterattack opportunities and pass the ball to Daiyi Chen’s feet, he will have a chance to take on Germany’s back line one-on-one.
Of course, Germany’s center-backs Rüdiger and Schlotterbeck are not easy to deal with. It is extremely difficult for Daiyi Chen to break through their defense. But if he can draw a foul in a one-on-one situation, or complete a shot, that would be a huge personal success for him. For Chinese football fans, we naturally hope Daiyi Chen can deliver an outstanding performance. Even if Curaçao loses by a large margin, as long as he can score or provide an assist, it counts as a moment worth remembering.
