Nagelsmann’s “test field” — will Germany play new tricks in this match?
Facing an opponent level like Curaçao in the group stage is the happiest kind of headache for a coach: winning is a given, but how to win—and with what lineup—matters. Will Nagelsmann conduct tactical experiments in this match? I think it’s very likely.
First, Germany still has two stronger opponents in the group stage—Ecuador and Ivory Coast. The match against Curaçao is the best opportunity for Nagelsmann to drill attacking patterns and to iron out the substitute lineup. He may try formations that weren’t used in warm-up matches, such as 3-4-3 or 4-1-4-1, to see how well the players adapt.
Second, the key players don’t need to play the full match. If Germany scores two or three goals in the first half, Nagelsmann will replace core players such as Musiala and Wirtz after halftime, allowing them to preserve their energy. Substitutes such as Füllkrug, Adeyemi, and Baku will receive plenty of playing time. These substitutes are itching to prove themselves, and against an opponent like Curaçao, they’ll be extremely proactive.
Another highlight: will Neuer play the whole match? The 40-year-old goalkeeper needs match tempo, but he doesn’t need to overexert himself. Nagelsmann may have Neuer play 60 minutes, then bring on Ter Stegen to get a feel for the game. In short, Germany won’t play conservatively in this match—rather, they’ll play even more openly because they need to test new things.
For prediction players, this is an important signal: Germany may not stop just because they’re leading, but will keep attacking and keep adding goals. The substitutes’ desire to score might even be stronger than the starters’. So “a big win for Germany” is still a highly probable outcome.
