Dutch Youth Training vs. German Youth Training—Can Curaçao’s “Made in the Netherlands” Challenge the German Tank?
Curaçao has a very special feature—of their 26-man roster, 25 were born in the Netherlands! This is not a joke; it’s true. As an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, many players grow up in the Dutch youth training system from a young age, receiving Dutch football education. You could say Curaçao is essentially a “Dutch second team.”
So here’s the question: With Dutch youth training behind them, going up against the real German tank, what kind of sparks can they create?
The tradition of Dutch football is total football—total attack and total defense—emphasizing technique and possession-based control. Over the years, German football has also been transforming, shifting from the power-based style of the past to a more technical approach. In fact, the youth training philosophies of the two countries are becoming increasingly similar. Many players in Curaçao’s squad play in the Eredivisie—such as midfielder Bakuña and defender Martìnna—so they’re not unfamiliar with the tempo of high-intensity European matches. Even goalkeeper Rüm, although playing in the second tier of Major League Soccer, also has a Dutch youth training background.
However, there is still a huge gap between Curaçao’s Dutch youth training products and the real Dutch national team. Even though these Curaçao players are playing in the Eredivisie, most are not mainstays of major clubs. Meanwhile, Germany’s young players come from top clubs like Bayern, Dortmund, Liverpool, and Arsenal, and the intensity of their training and matches is completely on a different level. No matter how strong the youth training system is, it can’t make up for the difference in talent and match experience.
So my conclusion is: Curaçao’s “Made in the Netherlands” label sounds story-filled, but once they get onto the pitch, they’ll still be pinned down and thoroughly rubbed by the German team. The results of German youth training—Musiala, Wirtz, and Moukoko—are the truly world-class standard.
