Reuters: Draft memorandum between the US and Iran leaked, involving nuclear commitments, the Strait of Hormuz, and sanctions adjustments
Deep Tide TechFlow News. On June 14, citing senior Iranian officials, Reuters reported that the draft memorandum of understanding (MOU) being discussed between the United States and Iran shows that Tehran agrees neither to produce nor to acquire nuclear weapons, and plans to carry out dilution of its stockpiles of highly enriched uranium within Iran. The relevant implementation mechanisms will be further negotiated within the next 60 days.
According to sources, the draft MOU also includes a range of arrangements between the two sides in the energy and shipping sectors. In particular, the U.S. plans to exempt some of its sanctions on Iran’s oil exports within a specified timeframe, allowing Iran to continue selling oil and to receive related revenues.
On shipping, the draft indicates that Iran will immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international merchant vessels, while the U.S. will lift the related maritime blockade measures to restore regional shipping order.
In addition, sources say the U.S. has agreed to release approximately $25 billion (about 25 billion US dollars) of Iran’s frozen assets. The funds may be released through various means, including cash transfers, regional cooperation mechanisms, and financial credit lines.
