If today’s Brazil vs. Morocco match is the most evenly matched game of this World Cup, then tomorrow’s Germany vs. Curaçao could be the most lopsided. Facing this weak team that just lost to China’s national team earlier this year, I believe Germany will undoubtedly secure a big victory, with a goal difference of more than 4, for the following reasons:
1. The gap in strength and experience
Germany’s team value is approximately 947 million euros, while Curaçao is only 25.78 million euros (less than 3% of Germany’s), ranked 9th in the world compared to 82nd. Germany’s lineup is led by top players from the five major leagues such as Neuer, Kimmich, Musiala (worth over 100 million euros), Wirtz (worth over 100 million euros), and others, whereas Curaçao has no main players from the five major leagues, with the core being Chinese-born forward Chen Dayi from Sheffield United in the Championship (worth 4.5 million euros).
Germany has been eliminated in the group stage in the last two World Cups, but their recent form is excellent: a 9-match winning streak across all competitions, including victories over strong teams like France and the United States, and four consecutive clean sheets, demonstrating dominance in both offense and defense.
2. Curaçao’s defensive vulnerabilities and warm-up defeats
Curaçao has lost all three recent warm-up matches with heavy goals conceded: 0-2 against China’s men's team, 1-5 against Australia, and 1-4 against Scotland. Facing high-intensity attacks, their defense often collapses, with clear weaknesses in individual defending and team coordination.
As a newcomer to the World Cup (population only 156k, the smallest participating country in history), Curaçao lacks tournament experience. Their tactical approach is mainly a 5-4-1 defensive formation, but individual player ability cannot withstand Germany’s front-line breakthroughs and passing combinations.
3. Germany’s tactical restraint and fighting spirit
Head coach Nagelsmann’s high pressing and quick wing play tactics are especially effective against dense defenses. Musiala and Wirtz’s dribbling and breakthrough skills can effectively tear open the compact defense, and Germany has recently practiced targeted tactics such as wing crosses and long shots.
Germany needs to secure the top spot in the group: Ecuador and Ivory Coast are relatively strong opponents, and goal difference could be crucial for qualification. The team is under pressure to win big, especially since their performances in the first matches of the last two World Cups were lackluster (2018 0-1 against Mexico, 2022 1-2 against Japan). This match is vital to boost morale with a big score.
4. Historical head-to-heads and data model support
Germany has a perfect record against Curaçao, including a recent 4-0 warm-up victory. Opta’s simulations show Germany’s win probability at 90.7%, with only a 3.6% chance of an upset.
Several betting agencies predict scores of 4-0 or higher, with the odds for Germany giving 3 goals (the -3 handicap) as low as 2.07 (implying about a 48% probability), reflecting strong market expectations of a big win.
