According to Politico, the 24-hour behind-the-scenes details of the U.S. government’s export controls imposed on Anthropic’s most advanced AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, have been disclosed. The report says that Amazon CEO Andy Jassy raised concerns with the White House two days after the release of Fable 5, saying the model’s safety guardrails could be bypassed. Several key officials at the White House then issued Anthropic’s CEO a 90-minute ultimatum, requiring Anthropic to proactively take the model down, but the request was refused. Ultimately, the Trump administration used national security authority to put the export controls into effect, forcing Anthropic to fully shut down the relevant models worldwide. Anthropic later issued a statement protesting, saying the administrative intervention lacked transparency and did not align with principles based on technical facts. Notably, Amazon is also one of Anthropic’s largest investors.

90-minute ultimatum? That's not enough time for even food delivery. Are national security decisions made so hastily?
