Wounded and Full of Casualties—Which Team’s “Non-Combat Attrition” Is More Deadly?

Before the World Cup begins, both teams have been hit by serious injury problems. Whose injuries have the bigger impact will very likely determine the course of the match.

On Brazil’s side, Neymar has confirmed he will miss the first game. Right-back Wesley has also left the national team due to a left thigh adductor injury, and Ancelotti has urgently called up Ederson from Atalanta. In addition, Rodrigo and the rising star Estêvão are likewise ruled out with injuries. A key midfielder and a main right-back, along with a promising newcomer, are all sidelined at the same time—especially throwing the attack-and-defense on the right flank completely out of order. Ancelotti had already settled on a 4-2-3-1 formation; after Wesley’s withdrawal, the right-back spot will likely be handled by 34-year-old veteran Danilo in a makeshift role. However, his pace is on the slower side, and facing Morocco’s Achraf’s forward thrust will be extremely difficult.

Morocco’s injury list is also not short. Starting left winger Abde suffered an injury in a collision with a teammate during the warm-up match against Norway and withdrew from the World Cup. Starting center-back Nayef Aguerd has also been out for three months due to a groin injury and has not played for Marseille, and he is therefore unavailable as well. Right-back Mazraoui is also listed as doubtful to play. Core players are missing across all three lines; especially with the absences of Abde and Aguerd, both Morocco’s offense and defense have been affected to a greater extent.

However, Morocco’s system emphasizes overall cohesion, with relatively less reliance on any single individual. Brazil’s defensive vulnerability on the right flank, on the other hand, is a fatal weakness and is very likely to be targeted by Morocco in particular. By contrast, I believe Brazil’s injury impact could be greater, because Wesley’s absence directly changes Ancelotti’s starting plans, and the right flank is precisely the area where Morocco’s attack is strongest. If Brazil cannot address this problem, the suspense of the match will be much greater than many people imagine.
