Anthropic Disables Fable 5 and Mythos 5 Worldwide After US National Security Order
Anthropic said it abruptly disabled its two most capable artificial intelligence (AI) models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5, for all customers worldwide after the U.S. government ordered it to cut off access for any foreign national, citing national security.
An Order Of Potential Major Repercussions
The directive arrived on June 12 at 5:21 p.m. Eastern time, Anthropic said in a public statement, and invoked national security authorities. It required the company to suspend access for “any foreign national, whether inside or outside the United States, including foreign national Anthropic employees.”
Because Anthropic cannot reliably separate foreign nationals from the rest of its user base in real time, the order forced a blunt response. The company said it had no practical way to comply selectively, so it switched the models off for everyone, adding:
Reporting by Bloomberg indicated the Commerce Department acted after another company claimed it had jailbroken Mythos. Anthropic said it had seen only verbal evidence of a narrow technique (prompting the model to read a specific codebase and fix software flaws) and disputed that it justified pulling a commercial product used at scale.
Why Crypto Desks Are Watching
The shutdown is an AI story with a direct line into crypto markets, as onchain traders have spent 2026 racing to bet on the year’s biggest private companies before they go public, and Anthropic is among the most heavily wagered. Bitcoin.com News reported earlier this week that data aggregator Defillama began tracking pre-IPO perpetual futures for Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceX, and Quantinuum, with 14 such markets now listed as onchain AI bets heat up.
Those contracts let traders take leveraged positions on a company’s implied valuation without owning equity. A regulatory shock that forces Anthropic to disable its flagship models, even temporarily, is exactly the kind of headline that can swing sentiment on its pre-IPO perpetual, making the order relevant to crypto traders well beyond the AI industry.
The order is also an early, real-world test of how far national security authorities can reach into the deployment of commercial AI. Washington has spent years tightening export controls on advanced chips and computing power; applying that logic to the models themselves (and to who may use them) marks an escalation.
The directive’s reach over “any foreign national,” including Anthropic’s own foreign employees, suggests regulators are treating frontier models as strategic technology akin to controlled hardware.
A Fine Line Is Being Towed
In its phrasing, Anthropic struck a careful tone, saying it would comply with the directive while contesting its rationale and working to restore access. The company painted the suspension as a likely misunderstanding rather than a settled finding, and emphasized that its other models remain available to all users.
For users, the immediate impact has been sweeping, with hundreds of millions of people losing access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 at once, and developers building on the models being cut off mid-project.
