According to Livecoins, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced the seizure of 13 websites. The sites were allegedly disguised as consulting companies to lure current or former U.S. government and military security clearance personnel with high-paying fake job offers, and to induce them to submit sensitive information and “internal” reports. The FBI said the related websites are suspected to be connected to foreign intelligence agents and used artificial intelligence (AI) to generate content, as well as professional social platforms, to carry out social engineering attacks. The payments were made via cryptocurrencies to conceal the source of funds and the identities of the individuals involved.

High salary temptation + AI-generated fake identities—this trick surprisingly works even on people with security backgrounds, which is a bit ironic.

Using AI for phishing, laundering with cryptocurrency—this combo is quite professional, but the FBI isn't to be underestimated.

Thirteen websites can shut down at any time, but whether the on-chain data of cryptocurrency payments can truly be traced back to individuals is the real key.
