The Trump administration bans foreign entities from accessing Anthropic’s strongest artificial intelligence model
The Trump administration has banned foreign governments, companies, and individuals from using Anthropic’s most advanced artificial intelligence models. This move means the United States will further treat cutting-edge AI systems as core national security assets, and related controls have been upgraded again. Anthropic has been added to the U.S. Department of Defense blacklist. The U.S. side believes its models carry an excessively high risk, so even the U.S. government itself should not use them. At the same time, the model has also been brought under the Commerce Department’s licensing control system, which prohibits overseas entities from using it.
On Friday, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sent a letter to Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, explicitly stating that two models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, will be subject to export controls. They will be banned from being exported to outside the United States, and they are also not allowed to be used by foreign personnel inside the United States. A government official told the media that earlier, other companies had claimed they successfully cracked the Mythos model, which raised U.S. concerns about potential national security risks, prompting the Commerce Department to issue the above controls immediately.
The official said that the U.S. had previously asked Anthropic to pause the release of its latest models, but was unable to get its request fulfilled, and therefore ultimately issued the export control letter. The U.S. says that until the U.S. national security system has been fortified, these models must be strictly controlled, and related work is expected to be implemented within the coming weeks. Anthropic has not yet commented on the matter. (Sina Finance)
