One-sided head-to-head record—5 straight wins plus a 3-0 victory 96 years ago: how big is the U.S. team’s psychological edge?
When it comes to the historical matchups between the United States and Paraguay, the data is very much in the U.S. team’s favor. The two sides have met a total of 9 times: the U.S. has won 5, drawn 2, and lost 2, giving them an overwhelming advantage. In their most recent 5 meetings, the U.S. won all 5. Their last matchup was a friendly in November 2025, with the U.S. winning 2-1. And their only World Cup meeting dates back to 1930, when the U.S. won 3-0.
With all these numbers laid out, don’t you feel like the U.S. team is basically set? Hold on—I’d suggest you calm down first.
First, that 1930 match was 96 years ago. Back then, football is basically a completely different concept from what it is now, so its reference value is nearly zero. Although the U.S. has won the last 5 meetings, most of those games were friendlies or group-stage matches in the Copa América. The U.S. has never faced Paraguay in a World Cup main-stage match. The level of opposition and how much players commit in friendlies is in no way comparable to World Cup main-stage games.
Second, in friendlies, Paraguay often doesn’t show their full tactical setup. It’s more about testing lineups and working on their patterns. But in World Cup main-stage games—especially against a stronger team like the U.S.—Paraguay will definitely take the most extreme defensive approach, putting all their effort into limiting the U.S. attack. This “go all in” Paraguay is completely different from the Paraguay in friendlies.
Still, the psychological edge does exist. The U.S. players know they have never lost to Paraguay, so they can feel more at ease. On the other hand, Paraguayan players may carry a psychological shadow of “we just can’t beat the U.S.” But it’s anyone’s guess how much these factors will actually matter on the pitch. My personal view is that head-to-head historical data can be used as a reference, but it can’t be a hard basis for betting.
