Anthropic signs more than 1 gigawatt worth of data center leases, reportedly seeking Google to provide payment guarantees

Mars Finance News, citing Reuters, reports that Anthropic has signed more than 12 preliminary lease agreements for U.S. data centers, with total capacity exceeding 1 gigawatt. It is understood that Anthropic executives are discussing with Google the provision of financial guarantees for payments for these leases, while Apollo Global Management and Blackstone are providing private credit as part of a broader financing structure. Google’s Gemini directly competes with Anthropic’s Claude, but Google has promised to invest up to $40 billion in Anthropic and participate in the joint design of server chips. Last month, Anthropic completed a $65 billion funding round at a $965 billion valuation, surpassing OpenAI to become the AI company with the highest implied market value, and has already secretly filed for a U.S. IPO. Previously, Anthropic mainly relied on cloud service providers such as Google Cloud for computing power; building its own data centers is intended to reduce reliance on competitors. In addition, Anthropic pays SpaceX (which also competes with it via xAI) $1.25 billion per month in computing-power fees. Neither Google nor Anthropic has publicly responded to specific details.
