Shopify Manipulates AI Rankings with Dozens of Self-Generated Lists


According to The Atlantic Monthly, Shopify has released dozens of e-commerce platform rankings written by itself, which consistently place the company in first place and influence the rankings through manipulated generative engine optimization (GEO).
Large language models, including ChatGPT, use these Shopify-created lists as third-party evaluations when answering questions about how to set up an online store, effectively giving the company control over AI-generated recommendations.
This controversy also highlights a contradiction: Shopify co-founder and CEO Tobi Lütke has publicly advocated for a clean information ecosystem, urging users to read verified non-fiction content rather than "middle management garbage," and recently open-sourced a local retrieval tool (QMD) to protect AI agents from online ads and GEO manipulation.
