Samsung Electronics labor and management will resume negotiations tomorrow

ME News message: On May 17 (UTC+8), Samsung Electronics’ labor and management sides will begin the second round of post-incident mediation at 10:00 a.m. local time on the 18th. Previously, the labor side announced that it would launch a total strike starting on the 21st lasting 18 days, drawing attention to whether an agreement could be reached through mediation to resolve the dispute and avoid the strike. Under mediation by the Central Labor Committee of the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the labor and management sides held marathon negotiations from the early hours of the 11th to the early morning of the 13th, but they failed to narrow their differences on the standards for paying performance bonuses, causing the talks to break down. On the 14th, the committee requested that the labor side restart negotiations on the 16th, but this was refused. This time, both the labor and management sides accepted the mediation request, and the negotiations will resume after 5 days. After Chairman Lee Jae-yong of Samsung Electronics returned to Korea from an overseas business trip on the 16th, upon arriving at Seoul Gimpo Business Aviation Center, he urged the labor side to return to the negotiating table. Lee Jae-yong said that at this moment, we should gather our strength, move forward together in the same direction, and once again do our utmost to truly take pride in being “Samsung people.” Employment and Labor Minister Kim Yong-hoon also met with the labor and management sides on the 15th and 16th, respectively, to brief them on the government’s position and coordinate their views.
