Lately, I’ve been seeing everyone post “on-chain done,” and my first reaction isn’t envy of the gains—it’s to immediately think: what node/RPC/indexer are you using? To put it simply, a lot of what you call “on-chain” is often a version someone else relayed for you. Some of it gets queued, cached, or even stuck on old blocks. After experiencing rollbacks and blocks getting stuck, my faith in it now really just comes down to the confirmation count. Don’t rush to screenshot it as proof.
This airdrop season is even more obvious. Task platforms are rolling out anti-sybil/anti-witchcraft measures, and with an integral/points-based system in place, the “farm for free” crowd is competing like it’s work—I admit I’m a little jealous of others who can “get it instantly and record it instantly.” But sometimes it’s not that you’re slow; it’s the data layer that’s slow: RPC latency, the index not catching up, or the public node you’re connected to getting overwhelmed. In any case, I’d rather wait for a few more blocks and switch RPCs to cross-check, so I’m less likely to get fooled by the “displayed success” mindset. That’s it for now.
