Why do people who seem overweight often appear to have a good temper? In fact, this is often a psychological illusion brought on by appearance. A rounder face shape, a larger body size, and softer body contours can subconsciously lead people to associate them with an image of being gentle, harmless, and easy to get along with—so it’s easier to form the first impression that they “have a good temper.” At the same time, many people with higher body weight have experienced more outside evaluations during their growth process. In order to gain group acceptance, they are also more likely to develop social habits that are humorous, inclusive, and easygoing. Over time, people link this impression to “being fat.” But essentially, there is no inherent connection between body shape and personality; it’s just that humans are accustomed to quickly judging someone’s character based on their appearance, and a more rounded look makes it even easier to create associations of friendliness and kindness.
