Ethereum Foundation Director Reaffirms New Vision: Decentralization and User Sovereignty
The Executive Director of the Ethereum Foundation (EF), Aya Miyaguchi, shared her views on the future and the new mandate of the organization, complementing a statement previously released by Vitalik Buterin. In her statement, Miyaguchi revealed that EF is now preparing to transform into a smaller, more focused organization with a clearer policy direction. This decision was driven by her concerns at the end of last year, when technical debates within the community began shifting into political and personal issues. Additionally, the many parties dictating expectations about the organization's direction are seen as risking to obscure Ethereum Foundation’s main focus.
Miyaguchi, who has been involved in the crypto industry since 2012 and participated in handling the Mt. Gox collapse in 2013, reaffirmed the initial principle that EF is just one node or entity within the Ethereum ecosystem. Since taking office in 2018, she has envisioned a future where the network does not depend on a single entity. This decentralization vision is demonstrated through EF’s success in incubating and spinning off major projects like Uniswap, ENS, Gitcoin, and Moloch to stand independently. As a result, the Ethereum network has grown far beyond EF’s capacity, with the foundation’s ownership share currently recorded at less than 0.2% of the total ETH supply.
Going forward, EF’s main focus will be narrowed to a mandate to preserve and accelerate the core values and characteristics of Ethereum (CROPS) to realize user sovereignty. Miyaguchi assured that this team downsizing does not mean EF stops caring about institutional adoption or daily users, but rather adjusts its approach to better align with their core mission.
In the coming weeks, EF management is scheduled to release an official announcement to the public regarding the details of the new team structure and strategy. Meanwhile, Ethereum’s token is currently traded around $2,000, down approximately 59% from its all-time high.
