Mental health comes with a price. When you start respecting your feelings, setting boundaries, and no longer unconditionally meeting other people’s needs, you may no longer be the “good person” everyone expects. You may also face all kinds of judgments and accusations that arise from others’ self-interest. But you need to understand that you don’t have to pay attention to what other people think, and you don’t have to take responsibility for their lives. When dealing with others, taking care of your true feelings matters more than maintaining an image. Only when you stop obsessing over being the “good person” in other people’s mouths and begin living according to your own principles and wishes do you truly take your first step toward being yourself.
