Many people have a misconception that religion is just a refuge for the weak. In fact, a more accurate way to put it is: when a person finds that they cannot control reality, they seek a system that can explain reality. If a person’s efforts and outcomes are highly aligned—work pays off; plans can be carried out; predictions are basically accurate—then their sense of security mainly comes from the real world. But when a person realizes that effort may not always bring rewards; relationships can’t be controlled; birth, aging, illness, and death are unavoidable; wealth can’t solve all problems; and their sense of control over reality starts to decline—then people naturally look for a higher-level explanatory framework. When the certainty of reality decreases, people seek meaning in the spiritual realm; when the ability to act in reality disappears, people seek fantasies in the spiritual realm. The former is about understanding the world; the latter is about escaping the world. Faith does not arise because of weakness, but because—after the sense of control is gone—human beings continue to pursue meaning.
