Zed built-in Agent connects to ChatGPT subscription: defies the trend by waiving pay-as-you-go billing, explicitly mentioning Claude and Copilot in the article

Abstract generation in progress
AIMPACT News, May 16 (UTC+8), according to Beating Monitoring, code editor Zed announced that its built-in AI Agent now natively integrates with ChatGPT accounts.
After logging in, users can directly call OpenAI models and Codex capabilities through their personal ChatGPT subscription quota, avoiding the costs of API usage-based billing.
Previously, developers wanting to call Codex within the editor had to use the officially open-sourced ACP adapter for external configuration.
This update streamlines the internal process in Zed, making the authorization flow a native one-click login.
Developers accustomed to environments like JetBrains can continue using the ACP adapter to achieve the same API-free calls.
The option for enterprise teams to connect directly with API keys is also retained.
Mainstream code intelligent agents are collectively shifting to usage-based billing.
Zed explicitly named two competitors in its announcement:
Anthropic announced that starting June 15, the quota for Agent SDK (i.e., Claude Code's underlying system) will be separated from Claude subscriptions and billed separately;
GitHub Copilot will also fully switch to usage-based billing from June 1.
Zed expressed gratitude to OpenAI for going against the trend.
Along with today’s xAI allowing Grok subscriptions to access open-source agent Hermes, underlying large model providers are attempting to compete for developers discouraged by expensive API bills by decentralizing C-end subscription computing power to third-party applications.

Competitors are shifting to a pay-as-you-go model, while Zed is cutting costs and opening source, showing a poor strategy.
