Finally breaking out of IDE plugins: GitHub launches Copilot standalone desktop version, supporting multiple agents in parallel

Abstract generation in progress
AIMPACT News: On May 16 (UTC+8), according to Beating Monitoring, GitHub announced the launch of a GitHub Copilot desktop technical preview. Copilot thereby shifts from a single editor-assistance tool to a standalone application built specifically for agent-driven development. Developers can now manage multiple AI agents in parallel within a single interface to handle different needs and codebases. The new version abandons the traditional linear chat mode and introduces fully isolated parallel workflows. When multiple agent tasks are started at the same time within the app, the system automatically creates separate Git worktrees and branches for each session. Developers can have one agent analyze and fix CI errors in another repository, while also assigning a second agent to write new feature code based on the current Issue—without interfering with the code being written locally and without repeatedly switching terminals and IDEs. To achieve a closed development loop, the app adds an Agent Merge mechanism that allows agents to autonomously handle code review feedback, fix test failures, and directly merge PRs once conditions are met. The new version also natively supports connecting to MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers and custom skills to attach more local development tools. The desktop version is currently open for the preview waitlist, and Business and Enterprise subscription users can use it directly after enterprise authorization. (Source: BlockBeats)

The agent writes the features corresponding to issues, and the product manager is ecstatic, no longer needing to write detailed requirement documents.

Multi-agent parallel + independent working tree, this design indeed takes into account real-world development scenarios.

Only authorized enterprises can use it... individual developers have become second-class citizens again

Finally, no more toggling back and forth in the browser; the standalone app experience should be much better.

Agent Merge automatically reviews PRs—this is kind of interesting. In the future, can I stay up a few fewer nights waiting for review?
