ME News report: June 1 (UTC+8). Citing an informed source, London-based Iran International TV said that Iranian President Pezeshkian has formally submitted a resignation request to the office of the Supreme Leader via an official letter.

The source said that in the letter sent on Sunday, Pezeshkian emphasized that the president and the government have effectively been excluded from the country’s major and critical decision-making processes. This power vacuum has allowed hardline factions within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps to take control of the situation.

Pezeshkian added that under these circumstances, he is unable to manage the government and fulfill his legal responsibilities, and therefore he has requested an immediate resignation. It is still unclear whether Supreme Leader Mujtaba Khamenei will accept the president’s resignation, but the contents of the letter indicate a profound and unprecedented rift within the highest circles of power. In that line in the letter—“Unable to perform statutory duties”—the translation is: “I’m not backing the mess; don’t try to pin this on me.”

Will the supreme leader approve? It feels more like a palace coup than a genuine resignation.

The Revolutionary Guard has grown powerful, and the president has become a figurehead—this script feels a bit familiar.
