Aave releases a review of the rsETH incident on April 18

Abstract generation in progress
Wu said that after the investigation into the April 18 rsETH incident, Aave announced that the cross-chain bridge rsETH LayerZero V2 of the liquidity staking protocol Kelp accepted forged messages during the cross-chain process from Unichain to Ethereum, causing the Ethereum side adapter to release 116,500 rsETH, while no corresponding burn occurred on the Unichain side. Aave stated that the attack took place on third-party cross-chain bridge infrastructure, but the attacker deposited the stolen rsETH into 8 Aave V3 positions and borrowed out 82,650 WETH and 821 wstETH, affecting the Aave market. Aave said that the attacker’s rsETH on Arbitrum has now been burned, and the LayerZero OFT adapter has replenished 116,131.72 rsETH in 5 batches, fully restoring the rsETH asset backing, and the affected WETH and rsETH markets have returned to normal.

116k rsETH is gone just like that, the safety margin in DeFi is still too thin

Attackers are quite skilled, spreading their operations across 8 different positions; they are experienced players.

The incident response speed is okay, but prevention beforehand is the real deal.

The cross-chain bridge is having problems again—LayerZero’s verification mechanism needs to be thoroughly reexamined in a proper post-mortem review.

The OFT adapter is being added in batches, and this operation looks like squeezing toothpaste.
