ME News report: May 16 (UTC+8), the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting held in New Delhi, India, has concluded. Due to clear disagreements among member states over the Iran war and the Middle East situation, a joint statement was not issued. During the meeting, representatives from each country laid out their respective stances and exchanged views on regional security issues. Some member states expressed reservations about the Gaza situation and security matters in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized at the meeting that Iran’s sovereignty is indivisible and called for condemnation of U.S.-Israeli military actions. In addition, Iran accused some countries in the region of indirectly participating in the conflict. The UAE and some Gulf states were accused of having security cooperation with the U.S. and Israel; the UAE denied this and said its stance does not match the reports. Analysts noted that the failure to reach a joint statement shows that strategic disagreements among BRICS countries on Middle East security issues have intensified. (Source: MLion)
