CryptoWorld News reports that Aztec Labs has announced the acquisition of zkpassport and will continue to keep the privacy-focused passport scanning application fully open source. The deal retains the iOS NFC scanner and Noir circuitry. An Ethereum layer 2 privacy network confirmed the acquisition on Wednesday. zkpassport allows users to prove identity attributes on government-issued ID documents without disclosing personal data. The app initially gained attention on Aztec’s testnet, addressing the Sybil attack issues that hinder the validator set. Aztec Labs said that keeping the codebase open source helps preserve a public-interest framework. Aztec’s broader push is focused on programmable privacy, with its Ignition chain launching in November 2025, becoming Ethereum’s first decentralized layer 2 network.

The term "public interest framework" is used cleverly; it's not purely a commercial narrative.
