Abstract generation in progress
AIMPACT News, May 16 (UTC+8), ChatGPT has launched a personal finance feature that connects to over 12,000 financial institutions via Plaid, granting read-only access to user balances, transactions, investments, and liabilities. This feature is currently available in a preview for US-based ChatGPT Pro users, using the default GPT-5.5 Thinking model. Supported institutions include Chase, Fidelity, Schwab, American Express, and Capital One. After connection, ChatGPT can provide financial advice based on the user's actual spending rather than generic budgeting suggestions. OpenAI acquired two AI fintech startups, Roi and Hiro, over the past year to build this feature. Currently, over 200 million people ask ChatGPT financial questions monthly, and the product is aligning with user habits. It is worth noting that this feature only provides read-only access and cannot transfer funds.

Monthly 200 million finance-related questions—turns out everyone cares so much about money. No wonder OpenAI is eyeing this space.

Read-only is the baseline; if I could transfer funds, I would close the account immediately. AI managing accounts is okay; AI managing money is not acceptable.

Both Chase and Fidelity have been integrated—traditional finance giants still can’t escape the “you’ll see” rule of “try it once and you’re hooked”

Read-only access is considerate; at least I don't have to worry about AI suddenly going all-in on me.
