Tokyo launches support program for yen-pegged stablecoin companies

ME News message: On April 18 (UTC+8), Tokyo announced the launch of a corporate support program aimed at the social rollout of “yen-denominated stablecoins,” providing subsidies for expenses related to developing use cases and other related costs/expenses. The subsidy ratio is 2/3, with a maximum of 40 million yen per project. Applications are open until June 30. The official said it will conduct a comprehensive evaluation across dimensions including social significance, advanced features, feasibility, future popularization, and security and risk management, with a particular focus on anti-money laundering mechanisms, user protection, and response policies in the event of accidents or fraud. Deadline is June 30th, there isn't much time left for companies. Is it a bit rushed to start now?

Is the Japanese yen stablecoin finally getting serious? They've been just shouting slogans before, but this time let's see who can actually get that money.

Evaluating from five dimensions: social significance to feasibility, this scoring sheet is quite Japanese-style; I'm just worried it might end up turning into a paperwork competition in the end.

The key to the adoption of stablecoins is for people to actually use them. Subsidizing development costs is a good thing, but who will handle user education and merchant onboarding?

Up to 40 million—once converted, it’s only a little over 2 million RMB; for big projects, it probably won’t even be enough to cover them.

Anti-money laundering and user protection are included in the evaluation standards. Japanese regulators still follow their conservative approach, but at least the direction is correct.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has made a strong move: a 40 million yen cap, a 2/3 subsidy ratio—putting real money into the stablecoin market and making the use-case scenarios happen.
