ME News message: On May 26 (UTC+8), The Wall Street Journal previously reported that a Greek-flagged supertanker carrying 2 million barrels of crude oil navigated through the waterway off Oman’s coast under the guidance of the U.S. Navy. This escort operation is a new round of advancement of the “Freedom of Navigation” initiative.

Subsequently, the outlet corrected its earlier report, saying that a spokesperson with U.S. Central Command stated that the U.S. has not resumed the “Freedom of Navigation” initiative, and that reports about the program being restarted are inaccurate. The outlet also said that an earlier version of its report incorrectly described coordination with merchant ships as a new round of advancement of the “Freedom of Navigation” initiative.
